Imagine belonging to multiple worlds. No one world fits you perfectly but without the melange, your identity would struggle to exude.
At what point do we draw a line on where the identity mergence starts and ends? A view of two or maybe even more perspectives that exist within the bodies of the Maghrabi diaspora is now a part and parcel of the everyday.
We spoke to several individuals with an eclectic mix and asked the question:
What makes you the way you are because of your hybrid background?

Growing up in the states people always asked me “are you more Algerian or American” and honestly it’s a question I’ve often asked myself. Growing up Algerian, has given me a strong sense of tradition, and family values, remnants of an old culture that was systematically attempted to be destroyed by the west. At the same time being an American has bred strong feelings of independence and critical thinking. The 2 blend together to make a new culture, the best of both worlds, and just like once you mix qahwa bil 7hlib you can no longer separate one from the other my heritage and identity have evolved into something new.
Imaginez un peu.. Appartenir à plusieurs univers, aucun ne vous correspond parfaitement mais, sans ce mélange, votre identité aurait du mal à être complète.
A partir de là, on trace une frontière en essayant de définir les limites entre ces identités entremêlées. Aujourd’hui, au sein de la diaspora maghrébine on retrouve de nombreux individus chez qui cette double identité offre des perspectives intéressantes.
Nous avons rencontré plusieurs individus avec un mélange éclectique et nous leur avons demandé :

Ayant grandit aux USA, les gens me demandent toujours je suis “plus algérien ou américain” et, honnêtement, c’est une question que je me suis posé très souvent.
D’un côté, être algérien m’a donné un très grand sens de la famille, des traditions, reconnaissant d’une culture ancienne qui a été de nombreuses fois victime des tentatives occidentales d’extinction.
D’un autre côté, être américain m’a donné un très grand sentiment d’indépendance et un très bon sens critique. Le mix des deux crée une nouvelle culture, le meilleur des deux mondes et, comme quand tu mélanges qahwa bl 7lib, tu ne peux plus séparer l’un de l’autre. Mon héritage, mon identité a évolué vers quelque chose de nouveau.

ترعرعت في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، و إعتدت سؤال الناس لي منذ صغري عما إذا كنت أمريكيا أم جزائريا؟! و لأكون صريحاً هذا سؤال طرحته مراراً على نفسي. نشأت في الولايات المتحدة و أنا من أصول جزائرية مما أعطاني حسا بالتقاليد و قيم العائلة، شيئان يكادان أن يختفيان مع التطور و الإنحلال في الثقافة الغربية. في نفس الوقت كوني أمريكيا المولد أعطاني إحساساً بالإستقلالية و الفكر النقدي. الإثنين معاً يكونان ثقافة جديدة تستقي الأفضل من الإثنين…تماماً عندما تقوم بتحريك القهوة و الحليب لا يمكنك فصلهما فيما بعد، ثقافتي و هويتي تماماً نفس الشيء
